Best Alternatives to onX Hunt

A factual look at onX Hunt alternatives for hunters who want stronger terrain-reading and hunt-planning workflows.

Before switching from onX, write down what you actually need to change. A habitat shortlist, draw research, and offline GPS solve different problems. You may only need another tool for one of them.

Keep onX when its workflow already solves the problem

onX Elite includes TerrainX; compare its actual filters and visibility tools with your needs before assuming you need another terrain app. If your boundaries, saved routes and downloaded maps work well, adding a scouting tool can make more sense than replacing navigation.

Add RidgeRead for explained terrain candidates

Use RidgeRead to inspect a bench or saddle, compare cover and access, and save the reason you want to investigate it. Pro costs $4.99/month, with $29.99/year where offered; Free includes three analyses per month. Coverage and plan limits remain relevant.

Consider GOHUNT for research plus maps

GOHUNT combines hunt research with terrain filtering and offline mapping. Consider it when selecting a hunt and tracking applications are part of the same buying decision. Its Explorer plan has been discontinued; check the linked membership notice and current checkout rather than relying on old maps-only pricing.

Consider Elk Finder for a connected habitat shortlist

Elk Finder lists ranked zones across 11 western states at $79/year. Its FAQ says offline maps are not currently available. It may complement an existing navigation app; it should not be chosen as a like-for-like offline replacement.

A switching checklist

Back up important marks before changing tools. Check coordinate format, names, notes and route geometry on a small sample before migrating a whole collection. Verify that the receiving app actually supports the export format you use.

Recreate one offline area and open it without connectivity. Keep your old workflow until you have checked the features you depend on; neither a feature checklist nor a trial at home establishes field reliability.
