Best Hunting GPS Apps in 2026
How to choose a hunting GPS app in 2026 for navigation, offline maps, terrain analysis, public land scouting, and hunt planning.
I would check four things before depending on a hunting GPS app: location, offline maps, readable terrain, and notes you can recover. The comparison below uses documented features; it does not report a controlled GPS accuracy or battery test.
The shortlist for navigation and planning
onX documents offline maps, tracking and property context. GOHUNT documents offline downloads and waypoint tools alongside hunt research. RidgeRead provides private waypoints, tracks, offline planning and terrain interpretation, with Pro required for its paid planning features.
Elk Finder is relevant for connected habitat scouting, but its published lack of offline maps excludes it from a shortlist whose primary job is offline navigation.
Compare the cost of the features you actually need
RidgeRead offers Free, $4.99/month Pro and $29.99/year where available. onX lists $34.99/year for one state and $99.99/year for Elite on its official pricing page. GOHUNT’s membership support notice references $149.99/year for Insider; confirm its current checkout price.
A cheaper plan is not a saving if the required map layer is excluded. Compare the same state coverage, platform and offline task; prices in this guide are sourced references rather than guaranteed checkout offers.
Accuracy is a device-and-conditions question
Phone GPS reception, canopy, steep terrain and power settings affect location behavior. A marketing claim or a smooth track screenshot is not a controlled accuracy measurement.
Use a known legal trail and fixed reference points to compare track behavior on the same phone. Record the conditions and battery settings. Check whether the displayed location uncertainty is sufficient for your decision; a map pin does not establish a legal boundary.
Run an offline readiness check
Download the intended area and zoom levels while connected. Reopen the app without connectivity, pan outside the first screen and inspect saved marks. Check a fresh launch as well as an app already running.
Test the return-route workflow and carry an independent backup appropriate to your trip. A cached weather map or saved scenario retains its recorded time; it cannot become a live observation without a new update.
