Best Hunting Apps for Elk Hunters

Hunting apps compared for elk scouting, terrain analysis, public-land planning, and offline preparation.

Start with the job you need an app to do. Choosing a hunt, reading habitat, checking access, and navigating offline each call for different tools. Here are four options and where each one fits.

RidgeRead: inspect terrain reasoning before choosing an approach

RidgeRead combines elk terrain matches with explanations, LiDAR, slope and aspect tools, wind scenarios, and saved planning. Free includes three analyses per month. Pro is $4.99 monthly; the annual option is $29.99 where offered. Verify the plan screen for availability and trial eligibility.

Best fit: a hunter who wants to inspect why a bench or crossing deserves a closer look. Limitation: layer and analysis coverage varies; a ranked point is not a current elk location. Download and inspect the layers you need before going offline.

onX Hunt: property context, navigation and TerrainX

onX documents offline maps, land boundaries, waypoints and weather. Elite also includes TerrainX and other planning tools; TerrainX can filter elevation, slope and aspect and evaluate visibility. It is a substantive terrain tool, not simply a pin map.

The official pricing page lists Premium at $34.99/year for one state, $49.99/year for two states, and Elite at $99.99/year. Best fit: hunters prioritizing land context and an established navigation workflow. Check the tier required for each advanced feature.

GOHUNT: combine hunt research with map planning

GOHUNT documents terrain filtering as well as public/private land, waypoints and offline downloads. Its research and application tools can be useful when choosing a hunt before studying a basin.

GOHUNT discontinued Explorer in 2024; its support notice quotes $149.99/year for the transition to Insider. That is a published reference, not a verified current checkout quote. Check the current membership offer. Best fit: hunters who want research and maps together; evaluate whether you need that broader package.

Elk Finder: ranked habitat zones for connected scouting

Elk Finder lists $79/year for 11 western states, with ranked habitat zones and inspectable feed, cover, terrain and road-pressure layers. Its published FAQ says it currently works in a browser and does not support offline maps.

Best fit: narrowing a chosen unit into habitat zones while connected. Keep a separate offline navigation solution if you need maps beyond cell service.

Compare one basin before committing

Use the same basin, season and approach in each trial. Ask each tool to show access, one likely bedding bench and a route to inspect it. Record which facts come from a map layer and which are model interpretations.

Then download the area where supported, disable connectivity, and check the exact maps and notes you need. This is a repeatable evaluation protocol you can perform; we have not reported invented test results.
